Dumka Engineering College, Techno India Group, in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), successfully organized the BIS Standardization Presentation Competition 2026, bringing together first, second and third-year B.Tech students from all six BIS Standards Clubs of the institution. The competition served as a platform to promote awareness of Indian Standards, product quality, consumer safety and responsible engineering practices among aspiring engineers.
Student teams presented insightful PowerPoint presentations on four key areas covered under BIS standards – Domestic Pressure Cookers, Two-Wheeler Protective Helmets, Domestic LPG Gas Cylinders and Portable Fire Extinguishers. Their presentations highlighted how standardization helps ensure product safety, reliability and consumer protection while demonstrating strong technical understanding, analytical thinking and communication skills.
Principal Dr. Ganesh Shankar highlighted that “Standardization is the foundation of quality engineering and industrial development, emphasising the vital role played by the Bureau of Indian Standards in ensuring that products used in daily life meet established safety and quality benchmarks.” He encouraged students to embrace the principles of quality assurance as an integral part of their academic journey and future professional careers.

Vice-Principal Dr. Ratan Kumar Bose remarked that “Engineering education must go beyond classroom learning by equipping students with practical knowledge of safety, reliability and quality.” He noted that competitions centred on BIS standards help bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world engineering applications while fostering responsible engineering practices.
Institutional BIS Mentor Prof. Pankaj Sarkar underscored the importance of Standards Clubs in nurturing a quality-conscious mindset among future engineers. He observed that awareness of BIS standards enables students to design safer, more reliable and sustainable products while strengthening their understanding of conformity assessment and consumer rights.
Sharing their perspectives, the departmental BIS Mentors highlighted the growing relevance of standardization across engineering disciplines. Prof. Sunidhi Priyadarshini (Computer Science & Engineering) spoke about the importance of standards in emerging technologies and smart systems, while Dr. Avijit Bardhan (Civil Engineering) emphasised their role in safe infrastructure and sustainable development. Prof. Arindam Dey (Electrical Engineering) discussed how Indian Standards contribute to electrical safety and system reliability, Prof. Debajyoti Sarkar (Electronics & Communication Engineering) highlighted their importance in ensuring interoperability and reliability in modern electronic systems, and Prof. Sruti Sen Sarma (Mechanical Engineering) underlined the significance of standards in product design, manufacturing, testing and maintenance.

The competition concluded with the announcement of the winning teams, who were awarded cash prizes in recognition of their outstanding presentations and technical understanding. While the winners were celebrated, every participant was appreciated for their enthusiasm, preparation and willingness to explore the importance of BIS standards. The event created an engaging learning environment where students exchanged ideas, built confidence and gained valuable insights into the role of quality and safety in engineering.
Beyond the competition, the programme left students with a deeper understanding of how standardization influences the products and technologies used in everyday life. It encouraged them to think beyond textbooks and recognise the responsibility engineers carry in designing safe, reliable and high-quality solutions. By fostering this mindset, Dumka Engineering College reaffirmed its commitment to developing socially responsible, industry-ready engineers while supporting the national vision of “Quality India.”
