Kolkata, June 20, 2026: Techno India University, West Bengal, commemorated Paschimbanga Divas (West Bengal Day) with a thought-provoking academic programme that celebrated the state’s rich history, vibrant culture, and enduring literary heritage. The event was organized by the Department of English in association with the Literary Committee and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).
Paschimbanga Divas serves as an occasion to honor the formation of West Bengal and to reflect on the state’s remarkable contributions to India’s intellectual, cultural, and social development. Known as the land of luminaries such as Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Swami Vivekananda, and Satyajit Ray, West Bengal has long been a cradle of art, literature, education, and progressive thought. Its rich traditions, vibrant festivals, diverse cultural expressions, and spirit of inclusivity continue to shape the identity of the state and inspire generations.
The programme brought together students, research scholars, and faculty members for an engaging exploration of Bengal’s journey through history and its lasting cultural legacy.


A key highlight of the event was the insightful lecture delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Saikat Maitra, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Techno India University, West Bengal. In his address, he traced the historical trajectory of India’s independence movement, with particular emphasis on the partition of Bengal and the formation of modern-day West Bengal. He also highlighted the significant role played by Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee, whose contributions were instrumental in shaping the political and geographical identity of the state.
Adding a literary dimension to the celebration, Prof. Suman Gun, eminent Bengali poet and Professor and Head of the Department of Bengali and the Department of Indian Comparative Literature at Assam University, delivered a special lecture titled ‘Deshbhag o Pashchimbanger Bangla Kobita’ (Partition and the Bengali Poetry from West Bengal). His talk explored how the trauma, displacement, and memories associated with Partition found expression in Bengali poetry and how generations of poets preserved these experiences through their literary works.

The lecture offered valuable insights into the relationship between history and literature, demonstrating how poetry became a powerful medium for documenting one of the most transformative periods in Bengal’s past. Through discussions on literary narratives and cultural memory, participants gained a deeper appreciation of how Bengal’s artistic traditions have helped preserve historical experiences across generations.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the university community, fostering meaningful discussions on history, identity, language, and cultural consciousness. It also highlighted the importance of preserving Bengal’s rich heritage while inspiring young minds to engage with the state’s remarkable legacy of knowledge, creativity, and social reform.
