Innovation knows no age, and excellence is not bound by academic seniority. Proving this on a national stage, Team BIT IGNITERS from Techno Bengal Institute of Technology, part of the Techno India Group, emerged as a Joint Winner in the Hardware Category at the prestigious Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025—India’s largest innovation and problem-solving platform.
What makes this achievement truly extraordinary is that the entire team comprises first-year undergraduate students. Soumyajeet Pal, Sanchayan Bera, Piyush Kumar, Sonit Kumar Ray, Ankita Das, and Debabrata Das stepped into a highly competitive arena dominated by senior students and experienced teams from across the country. With remarkable confidence, technical clarity, and creative problem-solving skills, they demonstrated capabilities far beyond their academic stage.
Competing under Problem Statement PS ID 25014, the team developed EcoSortX—an IoT-enabled waste segregation and monitoring system designed for smart cities and urban local bodies. The solution addresses one of urban India’s most pressing challenges: efficient and sustainable waste management. At its core, EcoSortX features a smart bin equipped with sensors and an Arduino–ESP32 controller that automatically segregates waste into wet, dry, and metal categories at the source. By ensuring segregation at the initial stage itself, the system significantly enhances recycling efficiency and reduces landfill dependency.
The innovation goes beyond segregation. Ultrasonic sensors embedded within the bins continuously monitor fill levels and transmit real-time data to a cloud-baseddashboard. This enables municipal authorities to receive timely alerts and optimize waste collection routes, reducing operational costs and environmental impact. Designed in alignment with the goals of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the Smart City Mission, EcoSortX promotes sustainable waste management practices, supports the circular economy, and contributes to healthier urban living.
A defining force behind the team’s success was the dedicated mentorship of Mr. Sukhendu Ray. His consistent guidance helped refine the concept, strengthen the hardware integration, and prepare the team for the intense evaluation rounds. From prototype development to final presentation, his mentorship played a crucial role in transforming an ambitious idea into a functional and scalable solution.
This national-level recognition stands as a powerful testament to the innovation-driven ecosystem fostered by the Techno India Group. By encouraging students to engage with real-world challenges, national missions, and hands-on technological development from the very beginning of their academic journey, the institution continues to nurture future-ready engineers and problem solvers.
Team BIT IGNITERS’ triumph at SIH 2025 is more than a competition victory—it is a statement that determination, mentorship, and early exposure to practical innovation can create extraordinary outcomes. Their journey serves as an inspiration to young learners everywhere: start early, think boldly, and build solutions that matter.
Techno India Group extends its heartfelt congratulations to Team BIT IGNITERS and Mr. Sukhendu Ray on this remarkable accomplishment and wishes them continued success as they continue to innovate, engineer, and lead transformative change.
