The School of Allied Health Sciences (Department of Medical Laboratory Technology) at Techno India University, West Bengal, organized a one-day seminar on World Lung Cancer Day on 1st August 2025 at the University Auditorium. The event, held in offline mode, drew an enthusiastic participation of 145 attendees, including faculty and students from allied health sciences, pharmacy, and nursing.
The programme commenced with an inaugural session addressed by Prof. (Dr.) Beduin Mahanti, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences; Prof. (Dr.) Shampa Mallick, Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology; and Ms. Bhaswati Das, Principal of the College and School of Nursing. Their words set the tone for a meaningful day dedicated to creating awareness and promoting preventive measures against lung cancer.
A highlight of the event was an engaging lecture by Prof. (Dr.) Anirban Chowdhury, Professor at the School of Design, Alliance University, Bangalore. Dr. Chowdhury presented a detailed perspective on the causes, risks, and pathophysiological aspects of lung cancer. He also shed light on recent global innovations in prevention and research, emphasizing how ergonomical and design-based interventions can help healthcare professionals combat mutagens and toxins that contribute to lung cancer.

The interactive session encouraged students to share their ideas on prevention strategies, particularly for those occupationally exposed to harmful environments. The discussions underscored the significance of smoking cessation, avoiding secondhand smoke, reducing exposure to carcinogens such as radon and asbestos, improving air quality, and promoting healthier lifestyles.
The event also highlighted the importance of early detection and low-dose CT screening, which has been shown to reduce mortality rates by nearly 20% among high-risk groups such as long-term smokers and those exposed to occupational hazards.
In her concluding remarks, Prof. (Dr.) Shampa Mallick extended the vote of thanks, appreciating the efforts of the organizing team and the enthusiastic response from participants. She emphasized the need for ergonomical interventions in both organized and unorganized sectors, stressing that industries such as construction must adopt innovative PPE kits to reduce dust and fume exposure.
The program concluded with a collective message of awareness, prevention, and compassion, aligning with Techno India University’s commitment to societal well-being. The organizers expressed heartfelt gratitude to the senior management of Techno India University for their support in making the event a success.
