Techno India University celebrated a momentous occasion on August 12, 2024, as over 3,000 students received their well-deserved degrees at the annual Convocation held at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre. The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the graduating class, and it was further graced by the presence of several distinguished personalities who were conferred with honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degrees for their exceptional achievements. Present amongst them, was Shri Shabana Azmi, who undoubtedly elevated the prestige of the ceremony.
Shri Shabana Azmi is an accomplished actress, social activist, and parliamentarian. She has left an indelible mark on the Indian film industry through her innumerable accomplishments and cultural icon status built over a five-decade career.
Some of the most powerful performances that Azmi is known for are in films like Ankur, Arth, Khandhar, and Godmother. Azmi has consistently pushed the boundaries of Indian cinema, often portraying complex and unconventional female characters. Her ability to bring depth and nuance to her roles has earned her five National Film Awards for Best Actress, making her one of the most decorated actresses in Indian cinema.
“The stature of the other recipients is so high… I really don’t think that I deserve this honour. But I do believe that now that I’ve got it, it also places a responsibility on me”, Azmi spoke after having being honoured with this degree alongside Shri Shankar Mahadevan, Shri Leander Paes, Shri Jogen Chowdhury, Dr. Kunal Sarkar, for example.
Beyond her acting career, Azmi is a passionate social activist. She has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights, environmental conservation, and social justice. Her work as a parliamentarian has also contributed significantly to policy-making and social change.
Azmi shared, “I think that art can be used an as instrument for social change. That’s what I’ve tried to do in my own little way. We need to get this awareness in all institutions… it’s not only academic excellence that they’re looking in, but a whole round development of personality.” She wished the students the best for all their future endeavours.
