As the festival of colours, Holi, approaches, students of the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology at Techno India University have taken an eco-friendly step forward. They have successfully created organic Aabir (gulal) using natural flowers such as Marigold, Aparajita, and Rose Petals. This initiative not only brings vibrant colours to the celebration but also ensures safety for both people and the environment.
A Natural and Safe Alternative
Traditional synthetic colours used during Holi often contain harmful chemicals that can cause skin allergies, respiratory issues, and environmental pollution. Recognizing these concerns, the students worked on developing a sustainable and non-toxic alternative using natural ingredients.
By using marigold, aparajita, and rose petals, they have been able to extract rich, vibrant colours without the use of artificial dyes. These flowers were carefully dried, crushed, and processed to create fine, soft aabir that is completely safe for skin and hair.
Process of Making Organic Aabir
The students followed a systematic process to create these natural colours:
- Collection of Flowers – Fresh marigold, aparajita, and rose petals were collected.
- Drying and Grinding – The petals were sun-dried to retain their natural pigments and then finely ground into a soft powder.
- Natural Blending – To enhance the texture and make the aabir smooth, natural starch-based substances were mixed in, ensuring the final product remains skin-friendly.
- Quality Testing – The aabir was tested for skin sensitivity and longevity to ensure its safety and effectiveness.
Promoting Sustainable Celebrations
