Calcutta experienced a dose of pure Christmas magic this year, as 2,000 children from 27 slums across the city were treated to a day of joy, laughter, and unforgettable experiences. The heartwarming event, a testament to the power of community and the spirit of giving, was made possible through the combined efforts of Khelo Rugby and Future Hope, under the umbrella of the Make Calcutta Relevant Again movement.

The day was a vibrant celebration of the true meaning of Christmas: giving, caring, and spreading joy. From sharing delicious meals to dancing and singing along to festive music, the atmosphere was electric with excitement. Shouts of “Merry Christmas!” echoed through the air, carrying the infectious energy of the children.
The event was spearheaded by a dedicated team of individuals passionate about making a difference in their community. Key figures included Prof. Manoshi Roychowdhury, Chef Shaun Kenworthy and Pinky Kenworthy, Paul Walsh, Dr. Andrew Fleming, and the driving force behind the Make Calcutta Relevant Again movement, Chief Curators Meghdut RoyChowdhury and Pauline Laravoire. Their collective vision and hard work brought this incredible event to life.

“The way all the kids are hugging you and wishing you “Merry Christmas” – lots to learn from them. It’s a motion by which you can create smiles on their faces. You can tell them through the actions that “you are loved”, said Prof. Manoshi Roy Chowdhury, Co-Chairperson, Techno India Group.

“There could not have been a way to spend Christmas morning! We’re here in Maidan with 2000 kids just playing rugby, engaging in physical activities… we’ve played music with them! We’re all having such an amazing time”, said Pauline Laravoire, Sustainability Director, Techno India Group and Co-Founder, Y-East.
“This kind of energy gives the exact opportunity to make Calcutta the focus of something where unique and special and magical things happen”, said Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner to East & North East India.
More than just a party, the day was about fostering genuine connection and spreading love. The children, the true heart of the celebration, filled the day with their infectious laughter, boundless energy, and pure happiness. Their bright smiles and joyful expressions served as a powerful reminder of the true spirit of Christmas.

The organizers emphasized that the event was a powerful demonstration of what Kolkata can achieve when its people come together. It was a testament to the city’s capacity for kindness and its commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of its most vulnerable citizens. The event served as a reminder that love and laughter are the most precious gifts, ones that continue to give long after the festivities are over.

The success of this Christmas celebration underscores the importance of continued efforts to support and uplift communities in need. It serves as an inspiration to keep the “kindness train rolling”, ensuring that the spirit of giving and compassion extends far beyond the holiday season.
“Big thanks to Shaun, Paul and to all of the people who had created this beautiful initiative 20 years back. Year-on-year, bringing so many young people together and showing them the best morning. Let’s keep spreading love, let’s keep spreading kindness. Let’s Make Calcutta Relevant Again“, said Meghdut Roy Chowdhury, CIO and Executive Director, Techno India Group and Founder, Make Calcutta Relevant Again.
The organizers hope that this event will inspire others to contribute to making Calcutta a more relevant and compassionate city for all.
