On Saturday, December 7th, ESEDS School of Design, a part of Techno India University, in collaboration with the Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC) hosted a vibrant and unforgettable celebration of the AMI Arts Festival 2024. Themed around the fragile yet extraordinary ecosystem of the Sundarbans, this multifaceted event brought together art, culture, and sustainability in a truly unique way.
The award-winning films The Land of Eighteen Tides and One Goddess were screened to begin of the festival. In a stunning display of the Sundarbans’ distinct and interdependent ecology, the documentary emphasised the importance of protecting this priceless natural resource.
A heart warming Kantha workshop brought smiles and creativity to children from Don Bosco Ashalayam, inviting them to dive into the vibrant world of Bengal’s rich embroidery heritage. The workshop not only sparked their imagination but also kept alive a cherished cultural tradition. Adding to the artistic vibe, attendees joined a hands-on craft session led by the renowned Mr. Saibal Karmakar, a celebrated artist with accolades from both national and international platforms. Under his expert guidance, participants discovered the magic of traditional craftsmanship, immersing themselves in a journey of creativity and cultural appreciation.
Children from Don Bosco Ashalayam were encouraged to explore the bright world of Bengal’s rich embroidered history through a charming Kantha workshop that offered them joy and creativity. Attendees also participated in a craft workshop led by Mr. Saibal Karmakar, a renowned artist with recognition from both national and international platforms. Under his guidance, participants delved into the world of artisanal crafts, fostering a deeper appreciation for traditional techniques.
The event also featured an exhibition of sustainable and artisanal products by a variety of brands, including Metaphors of Earth, Midory, Fika, Panchforon, Our Sweet Story, and Hum Tree. These stalls offered an impressive array of food and lifestyle items, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainability and mindful living. Attendees were inspired by the innovative ways these brands integrated eco-consciousness into their offerings.
The highlight was the stunning fashion show Mangrove, inspired by Sundarbans’ flora and fauna. Models showcased avant-garde designs reflecting the mangroves’ essence, blending bold creativity with environmental awareness. The collections featured diverse textures, colours, and elements, celebrating the natural beauty of this unique ecosystem.
The AMI Arts Festival 2024 drew over 150 visitors. Attendees were not only entertained but also educated about the critical importance of preserving the Sundarbans. The event was widely acclaimed and featured in Kolkata Times, further amplifying its impact.
ESEDS School of Design continues to set a benchmark in merging art with environmental consciousness. This year’s AMI Arts Festival was a celebration of creativity, community, and sustainability—a testament to the power of design in driving meaningful change.
