An ordinary classroom can teach students the letter of the law—but witnessing democracy in action teaches them its spirit. The Department of Legal Science of Techno India University experienced just that during an enriching academic visit to the West Bengal Vidhan Sabha, where teachers and students had the rare opportunity to observe live legislative proceedings from within the House.
The visit proved to be far more than a routine educational outing. Students closely followed budget-related discussions, attentively noting how diverse political parties articulated their viewpoints, debated policies, and upheld parliamentary decorum. Watching elected representatives engage in structured argument, follow protocol, and participate in decision-making offered a practical understanding of parliamentary democracy that textbooks alone cannot provide.
The delegation was led by Dr. Deboshree Chakraborty, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Legal Science, whose academic vision continues to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world legal exposure. Known for her commitment to experiential learning and academic leadership, Dr. Chakraborty has played a significant role in shaping the department’s student-centric and practice-oriented approach to legal education.

Accompanying her were Upasana Ghosh and Rituparna Mullick, Assistant Professors of the Department of Legal Science, both of whom actively mentor students beyond conventional classroom boundaries. Their dedication to nurturing analytical thinking and professional ethics in future legal professionals was reflected in the thoughtful guidance provided throughout the visit.
For the students, the experience was eye-opening and deeply memorable. Observing live proceedings allowed them to connect constitutional principles with their practical implementation, fostering a deeper appreciation of democratic institutions and governance. The visit sparked curiosity, discussion, and reflection—key elements in shaping responsible and informed legal professionals.
The Department of Legal Science continues to emphasize learning beyond textbooks, and this visit to the West Bengal Vidhan Sabha stands as a testament to its commitment to holistic legal education. It was truly a day where law came alive, leaving students inspired, informed, and motivated for their future journeys in the legal field.
