The team Key 2 Innov@tion from Bengal Institute of Technology (BIT), part of Techno India Group, secured the top position at the Smart India Hackathon 2024, held on December 11th, Nodal centre at Shobhit University, Meerut, UP. They triumphed in the software category with their innovative solution for the problem statement PSID: 1718 under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
The challenge was to develop a tool that captures non-manual features of Indian Sign Language (ISL) and converts them into text. The team’s solution, an app called SANKET, impressed the judges by effectively bridging communication gaps between the deaf and hearing communities.
Led by Hrishikesh Das (CSE 3rd Year), the team included Snigdhya Saha (ECE 4th Year), Tuhin Kanti Panja, Jeet Ghosh, Vivek Kushal Chakraborty, and Monosiz Rai (CSE 3rd Year). The team was mentored by Dr. Arpita Chakraborty.
The team’s success would not have been possible without the guidance of Dr. Arpita Chakraborty, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE(AI & ML), their mentor, whose support played a pivotal role throughout the competition. The team is grateful for her constant encouragement and expertise, which helped them refine their ideas and push the boundaries of innovation.
The Smart India Hackathon is a national initiative by the Government of India to promote innovation among students. This victory highlights the team’s exceptional skills, teamwork, and dedication, and marks a significant step towards improving accessibility through technology.
